Languedoc crossed by Hérault river
In Languedoc, as everywhere, water has always been important. Pézenas is located very close to Hérault river. In this plain, the city has developped a great reputation during 16th and 17th century thanks to Royal fairs. Behind Montagnac village, l’Abbaye de Valmagne is a superb example of Cistercian architechture. Along the Hérault we recommend you to spend time in Saint Guilhem le désert, around the Salagou lake, and Mourèze circus, Villeneuvette (former clothes factory under napoléon), and le Canal du Midi.
First sand beaches are 20 minutes from Pézenas. La « Tamarissière », is on the river mouth, quiet and simple. Le Grau d’Agde et le Cap d’Agde, Vias are much more animated, specially in hight season. There are plenty of marvelloux sites to explore as l’étang de Thau (Marseillan, Mèze) and the oysters production in Bouzigues), the city of Sète, the “sand cathedrale” Maguelone, Gruissan et le massif de La Clape…
Haut-Languedoc regional Parc
30 minutes north of Pézenas start the haut-languedoc natural parc. A wild area of middle montains. This is a perfect place for hiking, diving in fresh mountain rivers, chestnuts picking… The Prieuré Saint Michel de Grandmont near Lodève, Minerve (classified “one of the most beautiful villages of France) or Olargues worth a ride.
Montpellier, Narbonne, Carcassonne
In one hour driving from Pézenas, you will reach many cities with historical and cultural interest : Montpellier capital of Languedoc and its medieval historical centre (pedestrian), Carcassonne and his famous remparts, Narbonne its cathédral, the cathar castles.
